Description: In this class students explore exceptional children’s literature through the popular “Five in a Row” curriculum. A unit study approach includes investigation into geography, writing, art, and science topics. Every two weeks a well-written and illustrated picture book takes center stage. Students hear the book read aloud, indicate on a map the location of the story, add to a list of literary and artistic techniques, and experience hands-on projects. Possible titles include: Climbing Kansas Mountains, How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World, Grandfather's Journey, When I Was Young in the Mountains, and Very Last First Time. Creation of a “Book Friends” binder encourages a life-long interest in reading. Take home information provides additional ideas for extended learning and discovery. Parents expected to help in the classroom on a rotating basis.
